Last Saturday I was lucky enough to get to attend an interior design workshop at CATC Design School in Sydney. I was bursting out of my skin to get there! This school is amazing and I have heard great things about it. The school covers graphic design, interior design and photography. I was there for the interior design. #heaven.
I was asked to meet a group of keen students on the steps of The Opera House. The students who had signed up to the workshop were given the chance to see what the industry and profession are all about before they attended the actual course. There was a mix of students of all ages: those wanting a career change as well as school leavers.
We were greeted by interior designer/teacher extraordinaire Melinda Kapp. She was gorgeous and welcoming and knew her stuff!
We were at The Opera House to be given a ‘brief’ about a space we would hypothetically design. We wandered and pondered and wrote notes…
Then we formed small groups to analyse the brief and start a mind-map. It was interesting to see how the groups all thought differently! Next we devised a concept. This was going to be our ‘key’ purpose for redesigning a space within The Opera House. Was great fun – although I doubt anyone will ever get their hands on The Opera House. Haha! We can dream though!
Next it was time for a bit of theory – this was my favourite part! Here’s my point form. It was like cramming in part of the course all in an afternoon…
The Elements of Design
- Lines
- Shapes

If you’re a design freak, you’ll know these terms well! If you’re interested in them, then maybe this course is for you?
Next we got to wander through the entire school. The building is in ‘The Rocks’ and is magnificent! The ceilings… ahhhh…

The Graduate Exhibition was also ongoing so we got to have a look. Above is some work from previous students… very impressive. They worked very hard and I was so in awe of these boards. The students were designing two spaces within a hotel and they had to portray the concept, plan, colours and furniture. Each board was different and I loved what some of them had done with the rooms! They even learn how to use ArchiCAD (3-D design software) so the level of quality was great.
Inspiration is everywhere with little quotes on walls and clever artwork. I was in creative heaven!
