Video Tutorial: How to choose your COMMENT settings in blogspot

I have a new computer program, so I’d thought I’d try it out with a simple tutorial for the Comment Settings on a blogspot blog.

Note: If you use the new interface in your Dashboard – switch back to the old one. Go to the right-top, click the cog and select Old blogger interface.

In the video I tell you how to get the new threaded commenting system and how/why to turn the word verification off.

I can see this new little tool of mine is going to come in handy! I can do all my tutorials this way. So much easier showing you.

Yesterday I mentioned that I’d be happy for you to ask me a question about how to do something on a wordpress or blogspot blog . I could then show you how to do it. I could gather a few questions and make them in to a blog post. Anyway, fire away if you have some! Maybe there has been something bugging you and you just don’t know how to do it. Maybe you’ve seen a blog with something fancy and you’d like to know what that element is called? Some questions I will answer in the comments below.

If you are new to my blog and wonder why I add random blog posts about blogging then maybe I should explain why…

I’ve been blogging since 2006. If you google me, some of my old blogs may come up.

I taught myself lots about blogs in 2010. I am creative and also mad about interior design. I think blog design and interior design go well together!

I then landed on the tv show The Block.

Since then, I am still doing stuff with The Block, guest speaking, charity work, interior design, but the most fun at the moment is blog design (both blogspot and wordpress). I love the creativity. I love the fact that I can work my own hours. And I love that it pays well.

This year, I’m focusing on lots more blog design, teaching people about blogging and I’m building my new house (yes, I’ll spill more on that soon). So there you go – mashing blogs and interiors together.

Plus for good measure, I’ll give you a running commentry of my day-to-day activities and I don’t mind the odd fashion blog post.

That’s what I’m up to!

Have a great week.

Oooh, Miss! Miss! I have a question.

Would you know why, when I comment on a blogspot blog, that it will not accept my wordpress details and I cannot leave a comment? When I go down to the part that asks you to nominate your blog address, I click on wordpress and enter my wordpress address. Then when I enter the verification code, it continuously will not accept it. I do it, re do it, re do it again. I know I am pretty bad at getting those codes right, but this is ridiculous. Any ideas, Miss?

Hi Jo, does the blogger have the normal commenting system in place, or DISQUE or one of those types?

      • Jo

It has the normal blogger comment system. I’ve just gone back and had a look. Where it says at the bottom “choose an identity” and I choose Open ID and then wordpress and put my address in as “violetandroseblog”.

OK. This is an error with blogspot, not you. It will probably work on some blogs and not others. I recommend using Name/URL or do you have a Google Account? Most people do, so stay signed in with it and then you can use it. Link the google account to your blog so people can click on your name and go straight to your blog.

A-ha. Glad for once it’s not me! Will link my current blog to my google account. Good idea. Thanks for that. Appreciate it. It was really annoying me!

            You’re welcome 🙂

I’m quite confused about RSS – s’posedly set it up on my wordpress blog, but I’m not sure it works. How do I check if people have subscribed?

    • Katrina (author)

Hi Julie, this is a topic I will attack on it’s own at some stage. Yes, it’s tricky. But depending on how you set it up – try going to feedburner.com (sign in) and you may see your subscribers in there.

Hi Katrina, my question is about adding google add affliates to my blog. I’ve gone to layout and tried to add a new gadget HTML/JavaScript but it doesn’t come up! Can you please help??? I’ve been approved for several adds and can’t put them up!

    • Katrina (author)

The HTML widget doesn’t come up? Or you’ve put the script in and the ads aren’t showing? The ads can take about a week to show on your blog. So if you’ve added the code in recently and there just seems to be a big blank space, be patient and they will show eventually 🙂

      • Rachel

Unfortunately not HTML widget I did add /javaScript I’m not sure if that would change it, I’ll give it a go. So no codes but lots to add! Thanks for your help and I have to say you guys were my favourite on the block last year! I don’t know how u did it!

Hi Katrina, I am worried that this is a silly question – I am usually pretty good at navigating and troubleshooting with blogger but this one has me stumped. How can I link my ‘shop’ page title so it goes directly to my etsy shop? I have tried a few things but no luck. Can page titles be linked to at all? Thanks! Ros

    • Katrina (author)

Hi Roslyn, No page titles can’t be linked externally. What I would do is save all the url’s for your page titles, then delete the PAGES widget and in it’s place add a LINKLIST. Then add the page title url’s in the link list and also add the url of your shop. Hope that makes sense!

      • Roslyn

Makes total sense! Thanks so much 🙂

Katrina this post is great. Unfortunately I can’t get my head around it until Thursday when my out of home work ends. I shall be back!

  • Saffron

Hi, thanks for asking! I have been blogging for only a year and I always try to work new things out for myself first.

Sometimes html is complex and one thing I can’t work out is how to make the links at the bottom of the page say ‘older posts’ and ‘newer posts’ and obviously link to those posts.

    • Katrina (author)

Hi Saffron, your blog already does this?? I just had a look. It’s just part of the template already 🙂

  • JaneofAustralia

How do you find great plugins?
I’d sure like to know a Shop Plugin that is easy looks effective and works well. Something that I can use from the Dashboard.
And by the way what’s the plugin for those groovy little side pop-ins sort of pop ups?
I teach myself a lot, have learned from you and others but occasionally get stuck and want an Aussie to ask.
    So thanks,
you already know me on Twitter.

Hi Katrina, thanks for being so generous with all the information you know, sharing with the rest of us. I have a question for you also. How do you join in when there are such events as teacup tuesday, or pink thursday or whatever these events are? I don’t have a clue where to start. Thanks Cindy (shabbynsweet.blogspot.com)

    • Katrina (author)

HI Cindy, I haven’t joined a linky party before but as far as I know you would do a post on your own blog about the topic, copy and save the www address to that post and pop it in the form provided on the host blog. Hope that makes sense! K.

Hi Katrina, you’re so good to do this info stuff, thank you! I have a stupid question (new to blogging & tech-challenged too)..I know how to link to other sites etc, but how do I link from my own blog to one of my own posts? Have googled around but am clueless! (and a little embarrassed too). Thanks, have a great week, Kell

    • Katrina (author)

That’s ok Kellie! We all had to learn! So click on the post title – highlight the www of that post and then use that address for the link. Hope that helps!

  • kellie

And PS: I have a casual day teaching kindergarten tomorrow, and you know I’ll be getting last years’ kinders in for an inservice on how to use a smartboard!

  • Something Gorgeous

I’ve stumbled at the first hurdle…..I can’t work out how to go back to my old interface. I clicked the cog, but am not given an option to click old interface?

    • Katrina (author)

Sorry I took ages in getting back to you. Did you manage to get your interface back? yay for gravatar!

  • Something Gorgeous

PS: Thanks at least I was able to get the gravatar picture to show up.x

  • kellie

Hi Katrina, you are too smart for words! Thanks so much for your help, it works! Have a lovely day, Kell

Thanks for always being so generous and sharing your blogging knowledge with us Katrina and letting us ask questions. What is your opinion on the new vs old Blogger interface? I had switched over to the new recently, but after reading this post, am wondering should I still be on the old?

Also, when I was still on the new one, I got a message at the top of my screen saying my browser no longer supported something or other and some parts of my blog perhaps wouldn’t work and to try Google Chrome. Do you know what Google Chrome is and is it necessary for blogging with Blogger?

    • Katrina (author)

I prefer the old. Chrome is just like a search engine. I do have it installed, but it’s not necessary. It should have an effect on your blog though.
