Are you at the top of the Blogging Game?

Blogging has become an ‘industry’ of sorts. It’s become a business and a way to making money for some. See yesterday’s blog post where I talked about making money from blogging…

Ok, you’ve got all the bells and whistles for your blog… It’s been built properly, you have all the widgets and plugins happening with pop up’s and social media sharing buttons, but it’s just not happening for you? You’ve signed up and bought online classes and you just can’t seem to get your blog to fly??

First let’s look at the blog statistics. I found some for you and put it all together in this little infographic I created. Feel free to PIN IT, right click and save and share this around!

So now you know the numbers, how come you can’t get your blog to take off? It’s puzzling sometimes isn’t it? I know that feeling. Actually I feel like that often. Roll your eyes if you want! But truly, I am not nearly at the top of my game. Not even close. Only because the goals I have for it haven’t been met yet. It’s all about your comfort level and how you feel about the direction your blog is going in… Yes, I may have some good numbers visiting my blog daily, but it hasn’t hit some pivotal points yet. I have these written down as my goals. You’ve got to have BLOG GOALS! If you don’t, you’d better start writing some down pronto (that’s if you want it to grow!). If you’re blogging for fun, then this post isn’t for you. This blog post is for those who really want to take their blog up a notch and work out how to get it to make you some $$ (not for the bloggers who enjoy writing for fun). 🙂

Let’s start with the Blogging Myths:

  • Anyone can be a blogger thesedays
  • You don’t need any background skills
  • You can add in affiliate links and make money
  • You don’t have to be able to write
  • You don’t have to write every day

See that above list? Think about it. Do you have any of those attitudes towards blogging?

Now let me tell what I think…

It all comes down to routine and discipline.

You have to find a routine stick with it. 100%. No wavering from it and no bad attitude. No matter what, you HAVE to blog consistently.

And this is the part you’re not going to like reading… You have to blog every day. EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Suck it up, recognise that this is a fact and start working on HOW you’ll achieve that.

Think about some of the big bloggers you follow… they blog every day don’t they? And when I say every day, I mean 95% of the time (yeah, I get it, sometimes a Saturday or Sunday might not be your thing). For example – I blog every single day. Sometimes I take a day break here and there. But as a general rule I do it every day. I also stick to the same time every day so my audience gets used to the routine and know to expect something.

You need to persevere and you need to start accepting that if you don’t blog every day your presence cannot be felt among your competition. You need to find your skills and start writing about them…

How are you going to do this every single day?

Plan ahead, write in advance, get someone to guest post… but it has to be done daily.

You need to show up, get in to it, promote it, own it and flog it. Every day you need to think about pimping out your blog to Twitter and Facebook. You need to reply to comments, get active and start conversations.

This is how your blog will learn to fly on it’s own.

Put the work in and discipline yourself. Sell yourself and your blog over and over again and people will start believing in it.

This is how you’ll start to make money from blogging. This is how you will draw your clients in (see yesterday’s post!).

So today, make a start… start writing tomorrow’s post and the day after…

How often do you blog at the moment? Can you take it to the next level?

Happy blogging friends! X

Hi, at the moment I only write two posts a week (but at the same days and times) because I haven’t been doing it long. I could step it up and write more in the week but my posts are always articles so I worry that people will get bored of me. I don’t really do posts that are news snippets or showing bunches of images of things I like. Should I consider doing this in order to increase my posts? Or just concentrate on doing lots more social media posts, in addition to my twice weekly articles? Thanks!

Hi Susan! Thanks for reading along… Can you break up your posts in to parts. This is a great idea because it encourages people to come back and gives you more content. You don’t have to show bunches of images on things you like, but maybe you could write a plan on things you could cover in 5 posts a week? Can you have a series? Like a certain thing on a Friday? Can you also to posts with numbers – like Top 10 movies of the 90s… you get what I mean? I always find topics to write about at the oddest times and I look at my life as one whole blog post haha! So I forever writing notes in my phone as I think of things I could write about. Hope that helps a little? Of course, if you don’t want to make money from your blog or gain a big audience then you don’t have to blog every day – just my suggestion for those who want their blog to really take off. X

I used to blog every day. It got too much. I was blogging crap. I decided I’d blog less frequently, only when I had something worth blogging about. And it’s doing much better since I made that decision.

If I could justify not taking on the other paid work, I could manage to blog every day. But for me it’s just not feasible.

    Yet. You never know!

That’s true too Emily – you have to be dedicated to the content and always have something to put on your blog. The commitment has to be there. You have to do what’s manageable, to make your blog a business it needs to be updated daily. And yes, you never know! Good luck with it all. X

Thanks Katrina for this post. I have been blogging for 18 months now (a blog reader for about 6yrs) and just last weekend decided it was time to step it up and I’ve planned the next 3 months of posts. I completely agree with you on posting daily – I had planned to post 4 days a week but will need to go back to the planner and see where I can expand. Interesting tidbits to digest about blogging. The one thing I can never decide is what time of day is best to publish a post. I don’t mind being consistent, but I have yet in 3 years figured out when is the best time. Any suggestions?

Before 9am is the best time 🙂

Thanks, Katrina. Loved reading that and those statistics are really interesting. I’ve been blogging for yonks now but this year have really tried to step it up and make some money from my blog. It’s been absolutely minimal but there’s teensy tiny bits dribbling in here and there. I so think you’re right about consistence and daily blogging. I have ebbs and flos of posting and I really think it’s detrimental to my blog. I know you’re right about committing to every day writing an I’m going to try to stick to it this time:) Thanks so much, again x

    Thanks Katrina
I post everyday but I only started by blog 4 weeks ago. I’ve had about 1500 visits with about 100 unique visits growing daily. I’m not sure if these stats are good or not. I spose as long as my graph is going upwards with visits each day thats a good thing.
Thanks again for this great info.

That’s a really hard question to answer because it’s not easy. Commenting has really died off. I can get 5000 people read something and just 1 comment for the day! I do a lot of chatting on Instagram and Facebook though. That tends to bring people to my blog. XX

Thanks for getting back to me! Guess I’ll need to up the self promotion on Facebook and Instagram!!
