This is my laundry

Hi there! Thanks for popping in!
I thought I’d share my laundry with you today. It’s big, boring and bland…

As you can see from the photos, it’s a lovely sunny room, and it’s a thoroughfare between the garage and the kitchen. I have lots of storage too. Originally I wanted overhead cupboards but due to $$ I had to cut back + I didn’t really need them because I have the huge ‘panic room’ on the left.

I try really hard to keep the room neat and tidy. It can become a dumping ground as it’s the first room you walk in to from our garage and when you’re in the kitchen you can see straight in to the room.

So…. I have been thinking about how I could make it a little prettier, warmer, useful…

Help me out? What should I put on the wall? I don’t want to spend huge $ here.

But no indoor clothes airers.. I don’t want to actually see my washing!

I was thinking of a few shelves (but that’s just more storage and the wall is huge, so where do I start/stop them?)?

Or I could paint it?

Or I could buy a blackboard calendar?

Or put a quote on the wall?

I don’t think the photo’s do the room any justice at all! Stupid iphone! But I’m sure you get the idea. All images that are not my own can be found on my Pinterest boards.

I even thought about putting a TV in there! I’m in there so much 🙂

So, what do you think? Sometimes a big bland space can be hard to work with. AND I am terrible at deciding things for myself. Give me YOUR laundry and I can sort it in 2 minutes, but I am so indecisive when it comes to my own house. I STILL have boxes everywhere and am happy to live like this until the right thing comes along, or the right idea hits me in the face. This is why I haven’t shown you my living areas yet! Do you do that too?

Wow….to have that bench space! Great location too for bringing in shopping and yes, dumping stuff; better there than in the entry though!
I know you said you wanted to avoid seeing your washing but a shelf with a rail for hanging drying clothes is essential in my house! (or will be when the laundry fit-out happens!)And art too….etsy is a great source of cost effective types. AND a calander / notes / organiser something….

We have a similar sized laundry coming from the garage in our to-be-built house and I know we will have the same issue with dumping of shoes/bags/keys etc. So we plan to make a combined laundry/mudroom. Just a simple bench with baskets for shoes and hooks for bags/hats, probably on the opposite wall to the laundry benches. They can look quite pretty if kept neat. Probably a mirror too.

  This is quite an expensive version but you get the idea! Could probably be done with Ikea stuff too.

Oh Katrina! Such a fabulous blank canvas. I would definitely add some colour through paint. That second last pic has been a fave of mine for years now – it’s so calm and serene.

Please don’t freak out when I say the word ‘stencil’! They have come a long way! Considering that $ are limited and wallpaper may be out of the question due to the humidity in laundry rooms, I thought you might like to check out ‘Olive Leaf Stencils’. http://www.etsy.com/listing/105275324/stencil-for-walls-ikat-pattern-no-5?ref=cat_gallery_5
You don’t have to do one as bold as this but I can see a sunny, happy, buttery yellow ikat design in your laundry then add your long shelves with some fluffy white (display only) towels and maybe some wire baskets!?

Its not boring its a new beginning! I like that the laundry basket is a pull out drawer Iv just paid $500 for a pull out bin in my kitchen similar to that – I hope it was worth the money I spent on it! I think open shelves with baskets for storage would work, maybe if the shelves were centered on the bench but leave the area above the sink and on the other end free for some artworks or wall decor to add some personality to the room. Im sure whatever you do it will look amazing 🙂

i love your laundry Katrina, seen as though it is the main thoroughfare for the kids what about a long horizontal rack with hooks for the booys to hang backpacks hats etc with & frame up & paint a section with magnetic blackboard paint so its like a cross between a family command ventre & mudroom.
