Never ever look back

I was reading some blog posts the other day giving advice on social media. Boy, aren’t there are a stack of bad and confusing posts out there? If you’re new to the game, you could be left feeling overwhelmed and frightened!

Do this, do that, don’t do this…

I love giving advice, don’t get me wrong (I give it here and here and here). I love sharing what I know! But it can get confusing hey? Whose posts do you read? Where do you even start?

My biggest piece of advice is “never look back”. Own it.

I have learnt so much over the past 18 months. I’ve learnt more than I probably have EVER learnt in my life. I’ve had 150,000 facebook fans of The Block tell me what they think of me. 50% good and 50% bad.

But you know what? I don’t care now. At the time I found it hard, but I gained a new strength. Actually it’s been good for me. I feel better about myself now than I ever did. I’m comfortable. You can say whatever you like to me and it’s not going to bother me.

My point today is: never ever worry about what you’ve done in your life – proud of it, or not. Life is all about growing and learning and making mistakes.

Guess what, I blogged and tweeted waaaaaaay before I went on a tv show. Everything I’ve ever done online is still there. I swore, drunk tweeted, and laughed, and made fun of stuff. That’s nothing I am worried about. I own it. It’s me.

So be yourself. Never look back. Keep tweeting and writing and laughing.

Live your life. Don’t worry about what people will think. Those that hide will lose and be lost.

Own everything! Work it baby…

The best example of this is from Josh and Jenna – they named their business Bicker Design Co. How ironic? I totally love it! But what an awesome example of running with what you’ve got. Never shy away from who you are!

Now, get on with your day and make the most of it… xoxo

Thank you for this post Katrina, it was a real wake up call.
Lately I’ve felt a little confused about the direction of my blog and I questioning the direction I had originally decided to take. Reading this has put it all back into perspective and I will be trying to live by this quote from now on.

    Thank you!

You know what I do when I feel like my blog mojo is slipping…? I stop reading. I stop looking at everyone else’s blogs and just concentrate on mine and writing stuff. It’s too easy to become worried and influenced by what every one else is doing. Then I find my groove again.

I am learning (through blogging) that it’s ok to be ridiculous……not everyone gets what I am doing but I know I have found some like minded people……people will either like me or they can click the escape button ;o)
    ……………………………………………
It reminds me how not everyone likes the way I decorate my house yet they are enchanted by it because I do it boldly and with personality……
    Thanks for the reminder Katrina
    Be bold and move forward!
    Tania xx
By the way I liked you on the Block so that’s 51% who like you……I also voted for you in the bloggy thingamajigget. Have a great day!!!

Go Tania! You’re doing a great job blogging 🙂

  • Penny

I am an open book. Sometimes it is a bad thing as every one knows to much about me. But that’s me! Nothing to hide here.

I honestly is so refreshing Katrina. Being yourself as hard as it sometimes, you just have to be thick skinned and ignore the negative. Trust me at 66 my mum still is putting me down. I am me. Good or bad.

Thanks for your comment Carol. You’re right, you need to be thick skinned 🙂

  • Kek

    Amen.

I’ve been blogging for almost six years and can’t say I regret anything I’ve said. I’ve even done a complete about-face on a few subjects over that time – does that make me a hypocrite? I don’t think so; I think it shows that I’m not afraid to admit that I was wrong and to learn and grow.

I love reading advice on how to improve my blogging, as long as it comes from someone who’s done the hard yards and knows what they’re talking about. But there are always a few self-styled “experts” who could be taking a closer look at their own blogs before they start spouting advice to other people…

I agree that “be yourself” is the best approach. Readers will usually figure out when someone’s a big old fake. Eventually.

That’s so true Kerryn… I got your comment when shopping so I’ve been thinking about it the whole time. Sometimes I have done a full 180 on a subject too. I don’t regret it either. The more you learn the more you change. I am happy to acknowledge it and move on. XO

  • Jo

You are such a wise woman Katrina!
Great advice and particularly pertinent to moi as I can overthink and obsess to the point of wanting to shut down my blog frequently when I think it’s ‘not good enough’.
You are absolutely right and I will keep your advice front of mind at all times – own it, be yourself.
    Thanks for sharing your wisdom:))

No truer words spoken. Brilliant. I loathe all this plastic posting, facebooking & tweeting. Keep it real.

  • Carly Findlay

Love this! So important just to own it and be proud of what you put out there. Well done on your success.

    Hey Katrina
I don’t actually read any other blogs, and only just started following yours. It’s sensational. You inspire me and make me laugh. I love your Tweets, FB updates and blog. Thanks for the laughs.
    Best wishes

This is a great post Katrina. There is no point regretting things we can’t change. We might as well ‘own it’ and get on with it!

  • Annie

    Ditto what Kek wrote.

Great advice Katrina. Especially for any of us newbies who find every aspect confusing. Love reading your blog and its nice to be yourself and relax. By the way I really hope I can enjoy the block half as much this year as I did last year. I think it will be hard to beat but already there are some nice peoples on there.
