House update: ticked off some big decisions

Hello! How are you all today? I’ve been hanging around my block the last few days. I’ve had some decisions to make…

This week you can see we have more of the front of the roof on. The verandah has been sheeted today too. I did the electrical walk-through and I think I got it all!! So much to think about. Although I did prepare myself a few weeks ago. I sat with the plan and pencilled in what I thought I’d need. I visualised where all my furniture would go. I’m pretty good at visualising things. A lot of people can’t do it. I used to work for a building company a few years ago and there were so many people that couldn’t visualise. This is why builders have to have display homes! I can usually draw something and am pretty confident I’ll know how it will end up. Can you?

See that lovely red drawing I’ve done? Well that’s some fancy gable finial thingy I have going on. The BIG decision was whether to have the area behind the front entrance peak filled in, or left open. So hard to explain, but I’m leaving it open. So when you stand under it you look up and it’s pitched up in the peak. This also means it’s hard to get an entrance light up under there because of the pitch. But never fear, we’ve decided on 2 little LED downlights. They don’t take up much space and fit in without a bulkhead. I also have some other lights going across the front.

I have about 12 cavity sliders and they are now all in. How did I end up with so many?? I had no idea! Haha. I have sliding doors everywhere it seems 🙂

I’m still hanging for my floating wall to go in. It’s going to sit smack bang in the middle of the room diving the dining and the living with open shelving, a tv and a double sided fireplace. I’m nervous about it’s width and the position. Once that’s up I think I’ll be able to relax. I’ve never done this wall before so it could go either way – it could be smashing or a total flop!

The house will get all the electrical cable through today and tomorrow. The frame has been levelled and packed out ready for plastering (but that will happen in the new year). The carpenters are now moving outside for all the weatherboard. They’ll spend a full week next week getting that up so the house can be locked up. Then husband and I will paint that weatherboard starting 2nd January when we return from the beach. Exciting!

I’m off to the Marketplace today to help wrap presents for a gold coin donation to support the Baptist Community Church. I’m not sure I’m a very good wrapper, but I’ll see how I go! Come and visit if you can!

Have a great day! X

My BIG REGRET is not having enough cavity sliders. OMG u have no idea. Every time I go into the boys bathroom that they share I kick myself about it.
The things you learn along the way!
The house looks fantastic. I think the floating wall will work great.

      Thanks Pen, I’m excited!

I am always a little surprised when people can’t visualise something. I guess people’s minds work in different ways 🙂 It’s looking great. Rachel x

Thanks lovely. Yes, you’d be surprised at how many can’t. My Mum can’t!

Absolutely love seeing the progress of your house. In my “forever house” which is the one where I will have everything I always wanted, I have on my list a floating wall just like you describe. Can’t wait to see how yours looks!!

It sure does Katrina!! They say you need to build five times to get it right…I’ve only built twice… 🙂

I LOVE Your house already! I know it’s going to be amazing, even that WALL that is bugging you so badly! I had little things like this in our house…it was scary! I made some BIG Mistakes with this one, but I’m hoping to get another bite at the cherry down the track! 🙂 I’ll build again FOR SURE! I am almost glad to be rid of this one now!

It takes a few goes before you work out what works doesn’t it? X

I’m having the same problems with selecting lighting at the front door. The verandah at the front of our house is also pitched (no flat parts) so it’s not ideal for any kind of ceiling lights. Also the walls on the front of the house are single skinned so wall-mounted lights are out (I hate visible electrical cable/conduit which is what you normally end up with on a Queenslander). I am thinking of illuminating the space with uplights, which will create a wash of light across the ceiling of the verandah. Make sure you get some decent finger-pulls on the cavity sliding doors. The ones is our unit are awful to use – everytime I open the doors I bust a nail. xx

Ahhh good tip re the cavity sliders, thanks Caroline!

    Hi Katrina,
Yes I can visualise things but it’s amazing how many people can’t or think they can’t.
Good on you for choosing cavity sliders. They save so much room and boys don’t close doors anyway.
I hope you remembered your Christmas tree power point. I remembered ours but forgot to put one near the stairs for the vacuum cleaner. I’ve since had one installed so I could light up the greenery I like to wrap around the balustrade at Christmas. All about priorities with me! xx

Oh I didn’t think of the Xmas tree!!! Ummm now you’ve got me thinking! Haha!!

Your house it looking fantastic. Its all so exciting isnt it. I can visualize and hubby cant. When we brought our old home i told him i wanted bay windows in the front he couldn’t picture it,but once they were there, well it was awesome of course lol. We also renovated a whole, kitchen, dining and turned into shower/bathroom job at that place too and we did an awesome job, then we moved:(

Where we are now we have done some big renovations in the back yard, so when i asked him to put a screen up to we could hide the bins he also didn’t get it. But he loves it now and am glad i talked him into it.

How about your hubby, can he visualize or is he happy to go with the flow but add his own ideas here and there?

Floating wall with double-sided fireplace will be great. We installed a built-in double-sided fireplace between our kitchen/dining and living and it looks fantastic. Hanging out until next winter when we can use it… Have you thought about the hearth yet? We managed to get away with a hearth that is flush with the finished floors as subfloor is concrete slab and for our small space, a raised hearth would have been too obtrusive and a trip hazard!
