House Rules 2018: Mel and David Reveal

This week on House Rules it was Mel and Dave’s turn for a renovation. They wanted a Hamptons feel.

Mel & Dave’s rules:

  1. Transport us to The Hamptons
  2. Bring in blue with a twist of lemon
  3. Find a key vintage piece for every room
  4. Build in a handy dining nook
  5. Wrap our walls with wainscoting

I feel like the other team members really did try hard to bring all of these elements in to the home, but because it’s not a popular, modern and easy look to achieve, I think they made a dog’s breakfast of it. I did find it hard to look at all of these rooms. I will say the kitchen and main bathroom is bearable, but the rest isn’t great.

Come and check out the rooms below…

Josh and Brandon (Hallway, Ensuite and Sitting Room)

Jess and Jared (Powder room and lounge room)

Leigh and Kristie (Main bathroom and Billy’s bedroom)

Kim and Michelle (Mudroom and master bedroom)

Chiara and David (Laundry, hallway and dining room nook)

Toad and Mandy (Kitchen, Westin’s bedroom and bonus room)

What did you think??

Please don’t roll up towels, please don’t put clocks (or any artwork or anything decorative at all) in a toilet, please don’t use yellow grout, and don’t put stripes on a ceiling. 😉

You can see the previous reno here and meet the contestants here.

♥ KC.

I completely agree. They all missed the boat on this one. I didn’t see a good example of Hamptons style, I didn’t see any ‘lemon’, more like banana, and can somebody please teach these contestants how to make/dress a bed?!

I can’t believe they could stuff up Hamptons as it’s been the biggest trend of the past few years.
They could have gone to Kmart and done a better job.
There is no excuse for those atrocious children’s bedrooms.
I don’t mind the toile ceiling in powder room but agree that clock is Kitsch.
Living areas as very dull as well.

Is no one going to talk about that box thing on the wall in the mud room? How has no one walked into it yet? I would rip that thing down, quick smart. Along with that hideous yellow LOVE thing sooky David made. I’m sorry, but it just looks very amateurish and out of place. I love the kitchen except I think they should have taken the upper cupboards to the ceiling. I don’t know where the homeowners though they could put wainscoting in the kitchen, though? I hate the striped wallpaper on the ceiling in the hall and I didn’t like the kids rooms. Having that big dinosaur painted on the wall is a gamble, given that in a few months, the little boy’s interests will have changed, and then they’re stuck with that dinosaur on the wall. And I give a big fail to the main bathroom. Cleaning behind that tub is going to be a nightmare. A lot of fails in this house, but a lot of positives and great ideas too. Loved the boys’ entryway…set the tone for the rest of the house, just unfortunate that a lot of the zones didn’t follow through.

I didn’t think the house was very Hamptons either. Hamptons is a lot more luxurious than what they did in Mel and Dave’s house.

btw I really want to know where they got that huge mint green patterned vase which is near the kitchen window. I love it.
