Grey weatherboard house colours

I get asked about my house colours all the time. Every week I think! So I thought I’d put a post together for those who are interested 🙂

housecolours

The weatherboard has been painted SHALE GREY. I used Taubmans Endure (we painted the whole outside of the house ourselves). We asked Taubmans to tint the paint in full strength SHALE GREY. It doesn’t matter what brand you use, as long as it’s tinted ‘Colorbond Shale Grey’. I knew this paint colour would be good. I’d used it as a feature wall inside our previous home so I was confident the grey was the right grey. Not blue, not brown, not purple (you know how some throw the wrong tinge?). I also knew shale grey would be the right grey because it originated from Colorbond (used for a roofing) and I had seen this colour on houses in our area.

My roof colour is SURFMIST. It’s light (but not white). It’s a pale grey. I matched the gutters and fascia to this. So there was no hard thinking here. Sometimes people get so confused with roof/gutter/fascia. For me it’s easy – all the same. Now, the swatches I’ve put on the image above are small, so they may look darker, but outside over a large area, they do look lighter as you can see from the photos of my house.

The window frames, shutters, posts and fretwork are WHITE. No tint in that bucket of white. Nothing. Don’t get confused with whites. You don’t have to tint everything. This leads me to INSIDE my house. The walls are all WHITE. No tint. Just a wash and wear brand on the walls (with no tint added) will do, and the SAME white went straight on to the ceiling. My entire house has the same white paint from the bottom of the walls up and over the ceilings. It was Taubmans Easy Coat Walls. Now, if you did need to put a tint in your white (some painters will request something because they say the paint covers better), I would ask them to put a “shot” of black in that white tin. Like an incy bit just to keep the white balanced. But I don’t normally do that. I just like the whiteness which comes straight out of the tin. My internal doors, skirting and architraves are all GLOSS WHITE (again no tint).

So you can see that I picked THREE colours out the front – shale grey, surfmist and white. You can also see that the house looks darker in the shade and quite light in the sun.

The reason I know all of these colours work well is because this is the 3rd house we’ve built and we’ve renovated two houses as well (I’ve made some doozies along the way too!).

Hello, love your house colours. I have an existing shale grey roof and I am trying to find a colour for my weatherboards. Have you come across a combination with the shale grey as the roof colour? I would really value your opinion. Thank you in advance!

Would love an opinion/suggestion on another roof colour for the shale grey house. We are painting our old weatherboard, ranch style house in shale grey – love the look of your house in pic as it is very similar in style to our house. However we don’t think surf must is quite right for us as we have alot of dust storms up our way so was thinking maybe basalt? I’ve never seen it in person though. Thanking you for your time

    Hi Katrina,

I love your house! I was wondering if you think shale grey or flooded gum would look good on a rendered house with a charcoal/basalt coloured roof and white window trim. I love the shale grey colour but am trying to go for as ‘greige’ look. Would shale grey or flooded gum help create that effect? Not too sure what colours to paint the double garage doors either. Would love your advice.

    Thanks!

Hi Katrina, I’ve seen lots of photos of your house on Pinterest and they’re just beautiful. I was wondering where abouts you got your exterior lights from that are on either side of your front door?
I’m looking for some lights to go on either side of my garage door and they would be a perfect match.
Thanks for your colour inspiration too, I hope my first home turns out to be as wonderful as yours.

    Kuranda.

Hi Katrina, love the exterior of your beautiful house. Not paint related but can I please ask what little trees you have planted across the front. Love the white flowers!

  • Stephen

I love the exterior colours of your home, well done. Great work too with the painting. It looks very neat and tidy!

As a professional painter I much prefer brown or umber tint added to white to give it a little bit of coverage. Normally 5 drops per 15L drum is enough to assist with coverage and does not leave that tell tale blue hue that black tint can leave.

Hello Katrina! Your house looks beautiful. We are painting our house shale grey too – do you think a matching shale grey roof would work? We don’t want to go as light as surfmist.. Thank you so much!

Yes the house looks amazing, especially the color scheme. The house painting is simply amazing.

Hi Katrina, I think exteriors are the hardest. We are building a two storey coastal home with a balcony across the front and garages underneath. A little similar to,the GJ Gardner design Hamilton 280.
Our top storey will be weatherboard, with rendered lower walls.

If the roof is surf mist, do you think it would look odd if the rendered pillars under the balcony were also surf ist, and the ramaninf bulk of the home shale Gray? And if so if we had plain white windows, and front door should we also carry this to the garage. Your help would be appreciated. Below is a link to a similar exterior.

    Hi Katrina,

Love you colour choice, Our roof is currently Woodland Grey, I am tossing between Shale Grey and Dune for the weather boards and trimmings white do you think the house will look to light with roof being a darker grey?

Also we have a brick fence with aluminim slats running across between the brick pillars, should the Pillars be painted woodland grey with lighter slat colour or slat colour dark and pillars painted lighter color?

    Thanks

I love the exterior colours you have chosen – your house is beautiful. My husband & I recently completed our first build & unfortunately we got our exterior colours all wrong & now don’t know what to do to fix it. We just don’t like the look of our house from the outside. Our roof is ‘IRONSTONE’ colour, we chose to use GB Masonry blocks for the majority of the house & the colour we chose was ‘LIMESTONE’ which was supposed to be like an light bone/off-white but turned out to have massive pigments of beige & yellow in them. Around the garage is rendered & we chose ‘CRISP WHITE’, garage doors are ‘IRONSTONE’ (same as the roof). The front door, timber posts around the verandahs are stained ‘WALNUT’ which is a dark brown & the biggest mistake of all – we chose a dark brown colour called ‘DARK GRANITE’ to paint the downpipes (which are in front of the timber posts) & the render underneath the verandahs. So if you can imagine, when you look at the front of the house – you see a mixture of cool colours (being ironstone grey & crisp white) & then warm colours (being beige/yellow of the blockwork & dark brown). Oh, and we have black window frames and our external verandahs are tiled in a very light sandy sort of colour. We had no help with colour selection, we have spent so much money trying to correct these colour choices (we’ve painted the render twice – the first colour was Surfmist which clashed with the beige block colour, so we re-painted the render to Crisp White). We also had Crisp White underneath the verandahs initially as well, but that didn’t look right either, so we re-painted underneath the dark brown colour thinking that would blend in more with the garden. But it still doesn’t look right. It’s looks very disjointed and unfinished. Our original colour scheme was supposed to be tones of greys & whites – charcoal colour on the roof (the IRONSTONE) and the house itself was to be a mix of off-white/white. But because the block colour wasn’t what we thought it would be – it has thrown the whole colour scheme out and it just looks awful now. We are so disappointed. We haven’t even moved in yet & we are seriously considering selling it & moving on to a ready built house with a colour scheme we like !! I even thought about painting over the blockwork with white, but I am nervous – that would be a lot of expense and a possibility it would make the house look even worse! Any ideas on how to correct these colour choices?? We can’t really change the colour of the blocks, the only thing we can do is re-paint the render (for a 3rd time) and maybe re-stain the timber posts to black (instead of brown) OR paint them white, re-paint the downpipes the same colour, change the front door from dark brown to black & re-paint underneath the verandahs a lighter colour to match the tiles maybe? Any ideas?

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing your exterior colours . I like Shale Gray for the weatherboards and white for trimmings but my roof is colorbond Woodland grey will it still look good as your roof colour is much lighter.

    Thanks
    Rita

  • Jo Crystal

    Hi Katrina,
Should we use gloss paint for exterior timber Windows.
    Thanks
    Jo

      You’re painting timber?

Hi Katrina we are painting a house at the moment which is two storey, half will be render half boards (boards up and render down). We currently have Windows colour in pottery and are trying to work Gregor grey/blue colors for the exterior. Do you have some favorite colors that would work with those colour Windows?

  • Dan

    Hi Katrina,
I have recently put a shale grey colourbond roof on and now looking into a colour for my weatherboard. I want white trims and was thinking something darker than shale grey originally, but now starting to think something lighter like surfmist would be nice. Have you seen this done before?
    Thanks

Wanted to ask who your builder was or do you know who are the best builders for a weather board / Queenslander type / look house in Wagga. Thanks

  • Kellie-jo Gustowski

Just wanted to ask who built your house or who would you recommend to build (in the Wagga area) a weather board / Queenslander type house

    • Katrina (author)

Hi Kellie-Jo, I am about to start working with Paul Bourne Homes, so I’d be happy to help you if you are looking to build?

  • jason

Just want to ask what white did you use? There are plenty of white range, e.g. vivid white and natural white.
    Thanks.

    • Katrina (author)

Just white straight from the tin – Taubmans Endure brand.

I have a weather board house with iron stone roof and guter colour what colour would u suggest for weathboard i am thinking grey tones

  • Kirsty

Hi Katrina. Love your colour scheme! I am trying to choose colours for my weatherboard house. At this stage the windows are Surfmist and I was thinking about also doing the roof/gutters/fascia in surfmist, then perhaps shale grey or tranquil retreat for the weatherboards. I’m not sure if either of these colours will work with the surfmist windows though, or if there really needs to be more contrast? The untinted white looks great with the shale grey on your house, but obviously surfmist wouldn’t achieve the same contrast. I’m aiming for a fresh white look for the front of the house, so I want to go as light as possible without making the surfmist windows look dirty/grey white. Would love you opinion!

    • Kirsty

Actually, I’ve just checked and I can still change my window order from Surfmist to white. However, the only white they offer is called Pearl white gloss and it seems very bright shiny white. That’s why I had thought Surfmist would be better, though now I’m struggling to find a light colour for the weatherboards to go with the Surfmist! Would really appreciate your opinion 🙂
