DIY low-tox dry shampoo for light and dark hair

How often do you wash your hair? Is it one of those tasks you just hate doing?? Yeah, me too. I can go a week (I’m pushing it!) without washing it. I usually cave around the day 5 mark though. It’s a job I think “Am I really going anywhere today? Can I get away with it AGAIN??” In that case, out comes the dry-shampoo. That stuff is EXPENSIVE though isn’t it? It’s not something I’m willing to buy all the time, and when I read what’s in the bottle I get a little twitchy.

I thought why not make a low-tox version and see how that goes! This recipe is so simple and CHEAP. I already had the oils, cocoa powder and the little pots. I just needed to buy some arrowroot powder. It was $1.70 from Woolies.

DIY dry shampoo ingredients

  • Lavender essential oil smells wonderful and is also very soothing to the scalp.
  • Ylang Ylang essential oil is a sweet, slightly fruity floral scent that promotes the appearance of healthy hair when applied topically. It can prevent split ends and damage.
  • Arrowroot is a starch powder that is extracted in simpler, more traditional methods, without the use of high heat or harsh chemicals. Used for centuries to disguise greasy hair.
  • Cocoa powder to cut with the arrowroot powder for those with darker hair. Cocoa is rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps to combat hair loss. Cocoa powder is a nourishing and beneficial treatment for your hair strands. It can add vibrancy, shine, volume and promote healthy hair growth.

If you have dandruff or an itchy scalp, you may like to use Tea Tree or Peppermint instead of the Ylang Ylang.

DIY dry shampoo for light hair

  • 1 small glass jar. This one holds 30g. You could use little salt and pepper shakers too.
  • 4 tablespoons arrowroot powder
  • 4 drops doTERRA lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops doTERRA ylang ylang essential oil

DIY dry shampoo for dark hair

  • 1 small glass jar. This one holds 30g. You could use little salt and pepper shakers too.
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot (you may like more or less depending on your hair colour)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 4 drops doTERRA lavender essential oil
  • 4 drops doTERRA ylang ylang essential oil

HOW TO

  • Whisk the arrowroot powder, and cocoa powder if using, with the essential oils in a bowl.
  • Add more of either powder to create desired colour result if blending for darker hair.
  • Spoon in to your jar. It will get a bit messy!
  • Dust a makeup brush in the powder and apply over the roots of your hair.
  • Rough your hair up, brush well, or blast it with the hairdryer so it blends well.
