Dining Table Makeovers

Is your dining table looking a little tired? I see so many tables for sale on our local buy, swap, sell pages that have good bones and a good shape, they just need a serious sand (to rid themselves of that orange stain) or a paint job. Or even better, sand the top, add a pattern and throw in a few new industrial chairs. OR if you’re super clever, put some new legs on the table. If the top is in good condition this could be an option (and much cheaper!) than getting a brand new table.

Check out a few of these…

TIPS

  • Sanded tops look great – if it has a lot of yuck orange stain on the top, buy a paint stripper and use that first. Then sand with an electric sander (I love my mouse sander, it’s about $60 and I use it to death).
  • Paint only the legs. From the photos above you can see they look great black or white, but even an aqua/mint colour looks good.
  • Sand only the table, paint the chairs.
  • Put a clear wax on the top if you sand it back. No need for new stain.
  • Use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint if you’re painting. No need to prime or sand anything – just paint it straight on! Finish with a wax.

That black outdoor table looks amazing <3
I've been waiting 5 years for my husband to do sand ours back. It's pretty sentimental to him as his parents got it made for us for a wedding present 16 years ago. After reading this, I might have to tackle it myself.

Thanks so much for posting this! It’s so true there are so many dining tables out there that just need a little tlc. You’ve convinced me to tackle mine now – I love it but it’s just so drab and I was considering buying a new one – but now I will give it a sand and some paint and hopefully bring it back to life!
