Guest post from my sister Amie “I have a cushion obsession”

I have a tiny obsession with buying new cushion covers (and I will just let you know that before I had kids I was obsessed with buying new underwear…my how things have changed ;) ).

Anywho…I don’t like to spend a heap of money on updating my rooms, but at the same time I do really like to keep them fresh and a little varied from season to season.  I always find that I can create a huge impact by just updating my cushion covers with the latest prints and colours, and usually I don’t spend more than $100 at a time.

One of my favourite sites to find cushion covers is over at Etsy. I have bought off many different sellers over the years and have always been happy with the quality and price.

So I suggest that you get on over there and spruce up your living room, bedroom or even outdoor room…you might be surprised at how inspiring a simple little cushion cover can be!

GUEST POST: Foods to avoid and a yummy shortbread recipe

Today I have a post from Amber at Cranky Numbers

When I woke up this morning it was the same dilemma – not enough sleep, so much to do, planning a list in my head. I think umm put a load of washing on, make school lunch, feed bubby breakfast, oh what to wear nothing still fits not quite at pre baby weight must stick to the healthy eating today and try get a walk or jog in as well. While I am sitting here writing this out I can hear miss 6 and miss 4 watching their DVD in the background I think its Cats and Dogs. It’s funny how you can become so tuned into to the movies your kids watch and you start to yourself know the movies word for word – well that’s a true mumma I think. There is miss 9 months old combat crawling around in discomfort with her teething 4 lovely teeth at once. What are your morning dilemmas?  And do you have a list made up of your days or weekly events?

Well let me introduce myself now, Amber here from “crankynumbers”, you may ask who is “crankynumbers” I haven’t heard of it what is it all about. Well I specialise in getting the word out about preservatives, additives and artificial colours and flavours and chemicals in foods, drinks and many other products. I began a blog site shortly after I had discovered problems with food my first born. It first started for me; I was thinking why she is so hyperactive! I use to think it was just red cordial that could send kids nuts, but after I spoke to a fellow co worker who also said she suffered from reactions to natural chemicals and a few preservatives. I was in shock thinking all the foods that I had been buying for her all this time and the ones that market healthy snack for kids was infact sending her nuts. So I did a lot of research and put her on an elimination diet and boy in 2 days I was amazed and her childcare teachers were also amazed. Miss 4 went from being bouncing off the walls to sitting down and listening and bedtime oh that was a time I did dread but it was so lovely to put a tired child to bed not a child who was over-active because of chemicals preservatives and artificial horribles. My kids always ask me, Mum can we get those( pointing up to the fruit loops)? I say no sorry honey but they have cranky numbers in them so we need to go with the oats, they are much better for us too. When we are out at cafes having a coffee and baby cino I was always question what’s in there foods and I read over every label when shopping. I think if the kids cannot have it we cannot have it either just trying to be fair with the kids. I know they do go without a lot of foods that I know as I kid grew up eating frequently.
So after a complete 360 degree turn around in food for the household and after I had cut chocolate out of my diet I even noticed a difference in how much more relaxed I was. Speaking from a chocoholic experience – chocolate can cause IBS irritable bowel syndrome, irritability and low hyperactivity. There are hidden natural chemicals we are not told about.

I now home make pretty much everything that goes in the mouths of my children. I am so much more aware about what we put on our skin, wash our clothes and even dishes in. I have just started a course from home in naturopathy so I just want to be able to use this with my family.

My inspiration for Cranky Numbers.

Foods to avoid!

Well it’s back to the kitchen to bake some cookies maybe some yummy gingerbread ones or short bread… hmm what does mum feel like with her afternoon cuppa?

Yummy Shortbread Cookies for Christmas

This is by far the yummiest shortbread I have had.
300g butter (i used nuttelex spread)
1/2 cup caster sugar
3 cups of flour any brand is fine
1/4 cup cornflour
1/4 tsp sea salt (if you don’t have sea salt on hand table salt is fine).
PRE HEAT oven to 180*
Cream butter and sugar until nice and creamy. Add flour, cornflour and salt by using a sifter. (butter amount can vary with individual cooking technique I mix by hand so I require a little more butter)
Knead ingredients all together well and roll out on the a large pastry sheet or bench top surface .

Using a rolling pin roll out 12 – 18mm depends on your own personal choice. Cut into shapes (get adventurous – use some cookies cutters too).

Place on to a well greased tray, prick with a folk and bake in a preheated oven for 30mins (half the time in fan forced ovens).
When finished cooking you can decorate with some sifted icing sugar or get fancy with some icing and decorations.

Thanks Amber, you’ve got me wanting to make these now (and I rarely bake!!). They look delicious.

Do you have any links to some great recipes that are healthy for our kiddies? I’d love to see them.

GUEST POST: My Bathroom – My Sanctuary

Today Cathy from The Camera Chronicles has written us a post about Bathrooms. Thanks Cathy, you have made me drool and long for my own sanctuary! Pop over and say hi to Cathy :)

“The only time the world beats a path to your door is if you’re in the bathroom.”

Now, I don’t know who uttered the above words, but they certainly ring true in this household. Even when under the shower water, with ears blocked, there will always be someone beating on the door, expecting me to know where their lost toy is or expecting me to sort out a problem and/or discipline their sibling. It’s ridiculous that I can’t even sit on the toilet in peace!

However, that is my aim – that one day, like others, I will be able to experience the bathroom as a sanctuary, rather than a 5 minute pit-stop with screaming, shouting and door-banging accompaniment. Baths themselves have been around for thousands of years and have always been associated not only with hygiene but also with spiritual renewal. Singer/songwriter Alicia Keys once said, “If I want to be alone, some place I can write, I can read, I can pray, I can cry, I can do whatever I want – I go to the bathroom.” And this is the case for most people, even some lucky mums :)

I know there are a lot of busy mums out there who dream of time alone to relax and unwind, so in aid of that fantasy, I thought I would share some photos of bathrooms that one could escape to…
If you’re a “nature person”, you might like this Burgbad Sanctuary Garden Bathroom by designers James Wong and David Cubero. Don’t know that it would do much for privacy (unless you used the steam feature) but being amongst nature could certainly help you to relax.

Some people find cool colours very calming and this white and grey/silver marble feature bathroom certainly lends itself to that.

This following bathroom would be perfect for those who find minimalism attractive. What better way to de-clutter your mind, then by relaxing in a room that is free of clutter?

Want more of a contemporary bathroom with bold colours to reflect your personality? Then how about this gorgeous space?

This bathroom is a little more traditional in style, but I love the fact that there is a little sofa chair in there where you can sit in your bathrobe and flick through a magazine or indulge in a book. Actually, the picture is cropped – it could be a full chaise lounge! How indulgent! Dreaming…

For those who are following black and white trends at the moment, here’s a design that’s very symmetrical and clean. Personally, I think it lacks a bit of female warmth – would be great for my boys – but this is about me! They have enough “me, me, me” time as it is!

This art-deco bathroom is my favourite!! It wouldn’t suit the decor of my current house but oh, how lovely! I could certainly add some sort of elegant free-standing bath and reclining chaise lounge to this and be in heaven! Simple but utterly charming!

So which is your favourite?

GUEST POST: Colour Block Your Design Life

This morning I have a GUEST POST from Kristie at Elements at Home. She is an interior designer, a mummy (with another on the way) and has an online homewares store. Check her out! Here’s what she wrote:

So you have heard of colour blocking, you may love it or you may not know exactly what it means but it has made its mark on fashion and its only natural that Design follows fashions lead right!
Colour Blocking : A lot of colour. In bright blocks.
I have to say I have not been successful with colour blocking my wardrobe and as it is I am not sure they make this outfit in what feels like giant Maternity sizes.
Although I long for this look in another 10 weeks I can achieve it while waddling around my house moving my home wares items.
With a little inspiration I decided to try and colour block my Christmas tree…he he…let me tell you it doesn’t work, and actually you will hear Husbands everywhere cry from afar “Are you sure you are happy with that?”
So more Colour Blocking inspiration is needed and this time make it a whole space not a Christmas Tree.
Start with the Outside
You wouldn’t have to tell people your address, you could simply say the burnt orange on the end.
I wonder if you have to get the streets approval if you want to choose another colour.
Consider your Cabinetry
And we all thought agonising over 1 colour in our builds and renovations was hard, imagine deciding on 16 colours and in what order and above or below which other colour…
Your Paint through the house
Don’t forget to Colour block the men in your life.
No! Really My Husband would do it in heartbeat……..Who am I kidding.
Now the Furniture
I can’t help but admire the strength of conviction it takes to order a bright yellow over sized armchair and matching dividing screen.
Your Office, I know I wish too.
Your Book shelves.
We have seen this Bookshelf colour blocking in a few posts over the year but now it all makes more sense.
Your Elephant…..Just making sure you’re  keeping up..;-)
Your Living Space
Maybe just your chairs.
In case I want to try and colour block something else for Christmas I think I will stick to the Stockings.
Have you tried Colour Blocking your Interiors?
Thanks Kristie! So what do you think about colour-blocking? I am a huge fan of clothing, but hadn’t really given too much thought to interiors. So, after this post, now I am hooked! I want some fuscia chairs!
Have a great day x
